Congress has approved a schedule that has increased the tax free amount one can leave to his/her heirs to $2 million for 2006-2008 and to $3.5 million in 2009. In 2010, the estate tax will be temporarily revoked for one year and replaced with an income tax. However, in 2011 the estate tax will be reinstated with a reduced exemption of $1,000,000. If this occurs, many taxpayers will be subject to a harsh estate tax.
